“The fourth of July.” The words can bring many images to mind. Maybe you are thinking of a backyard barbecue with a grill full of hot dogs and hamburgers. Perhaps you remembered a parade. Or, just maybe, you thought of men and women who protect our homes and country every day. Some of you may reflect on the many opportunities, freedoms, choices, and blessings that we enjoy. Others may envision grand monuments to our history and the many trials our democracy has overcome. Yet, being an “American” hasn’t been easy. There have also been losses and many American flags at burials. Thus, the American flag is a symbol for everything that our country represents. It stands for independence, pride, sacrifice, opportunity, hope, strength, and freedom.
